How Many Times Can You Reload Brass Before It’s Done?

This is one of the most common questions new reloaders ask — and one of the most inconsistently answered. You’ll hear everything from “5 times” to “I’ve got .308 brass on its 30th reload.” Both can be true, depending on how you’re loading and what you’re looking for. Here’s a straight answer by caliber, plus the factors that actually determine when a case is finished.


What Kills Brass? The Real Factors

Before the numbers, you need to understand what’s actually wearing your brass out. The reload count is a symptom — these are the causes:

Pressure — Higher chamber pressure accelerates wear on the case head and primer pocket. Magnum loads chew through brass faster than standard loads in the same caliber.

Full-Length Sizing vs. Neck Sizing — Full-length sizing works the entire case body every time, which work hardens brass faster. Neck sizing only (for bolt guns) dramatically extends case life because you’re only moving the neck.

Annealing — As covered in our last post, annealing the neck and shoulder restores ductility. Brass that gets annealed regularly can last 2-3x longer than brass that doesn’t.

Trimming — Brass grows with each firing. Once you’re trimming to stay in spec, you’re eating into case wall thickness over time. Eventually you trim past usable length.

Primer Pocket Condition — Loose primer pockets are often the final death sentence for a case. When a primer seats with no resistance, the case is done regardless of how the rest of it looks.


The Numbers By Caliber

These ranges assume standard/max loads, full-length sizing, and no annealing unless noted. Add annealing and neck sizing where applicable and you can push these significantly higher.


Handgun Calibers

9mm Luger
Probably the most reloaded straight-wall pistol case on the planet. It’s relatively low pressure, the case body barely moves during resizing, and the brass is thick-walled. Expect 10–20+ reloads with normal care. Range brass you picked up off the floor? Still good for 10+ if it’s not already beat up. The 9mm almost always quits due to split mouths before anything else fails.

45 ACP
Similar story to 9mm — low pressure, forgiving brass, long life. 15–25 reloads is realistic. Some reloaders have cases that go well beyond that. Primer pockets eventually loosen on high-volume loads, but you’ll usually see split mouths first.

.40 S&W
Runs at higher pressure than 9mm and .45 ACP, which shortens case life. 8–15 reloads is a realistic range. Watch for cracked case mouths and loose primer pockets earlier than you would with lower-pressure pistol calibers.

10mm Auto
Higher pressure than .40 S&W and a more demanding case. 6–12 reloads at full-power loads. If you’re downloading to .40 S&W pressures, you’ll get more. Primer pockets are the usual failure point here.

.357 Magnum / .44 Magnum
Revolver brass actually does well because it doesn’t go through a semi-auto’s feed and extraction cycle, but the pressures are significant. 8–15 reloads for .357 Mag, similar for .44 Mag. Moon-clipped brass for semi-autos will wear faster.


Rifle Calibers

.223 Remington / 5.56 NATO
Here’s where it gets nuanced. Military surplus 5.56 brass has thicker case walls and tighter primer pockets (crimped, usually), which actually makes it tougher in some ways. Commercial .223 brass is softer. Either way, full-length sizing for AR use puts more stress on the case than bolt gun neck sizing.

  • AR/semi-auto, full-length sizing: 5–8 reloads
  • Bolt gun, neck sizing only: 10–15 reloads
  • Add annealing: push both ranges higher

.308 Winchester / 7.62×51
The workhorse of precision rifle shooting. Good brass (Lapua, Starline, Federal) with proper case prep can go a long time.

  • Neck sizing, precision loads: 15–20+ reloads
  • With regular annealing: case life extends significantly

This is a caliber where investing in quality brass and taking care of it makes real financial sense. The cost per case is high enough that maximizing case life matters.

6.5 Creedmoor
The precision shooting world’s current darling. Moderate pressure, excellent brass quality from major manufacturers. Treat it right and it lasts.

  • Full-length sizing: 6–10 reloads
  • Neck sizing with annealing: 15–25 reloads

Precision 6.5 Creedmoor shooters are often the most obsessive about case prep — and their brass shows it. These guys are getting 20+ reloads and still checking primer pockets.

.30-06 Springfield
A lot of once-fired ’06 brass out there, and it’s tough stuff. Similar to .308 in most respects.

  • Full-length sizing: 5–10 reloads
  • Neck sizing: 12–18 reloads

.300 Winchester Magnum
Higher pressure and a larger case means more stress per firing. Magnum brass dies faster than standard rifle brass at the same reload count.

  • Full-length sizing, max loads: 4–7 reloads
  • Reduced loads, neck sizing, annealing: 10–15 reloads

Primer pocket loosening is the primary failure mode here. Check every time.

.338 Lapua Magnum
Extreme pressure, expensive brass, serious reloaders. Most .338 Lapua shooters are already doing everything right — annealing, neck sizing, careful load development.

  • Well-cared-for brass: 10–15 reloads
  • Maximum loads without annealing: 4–6 reloads

The economics of .338 Lapua basically demand you take care of your brass. At $2.50-4.00+ per case new, you don’t throw this stuff away lightly.


How to Know When a Case Is Actually Done

Don’t reload by count alone. Inspect your brass and watch for these:

It’s time to trash the case when you see:

  • Split or cracked neck — done, no debate
  • Primer seats with no resistance — loose pocket, done
  • Head separation or bright ring near the web — dangerous, trash it immediately
  • Case length below minimum trim length — you’ve trimmed past usable
  • Visible cracks anywhere on the case body — done

Signs to watch but not panic about yet:

  • Slight case mouth flare (can be trimmed and chamfered)
  • Minor neck discoloration (annealing candidate)
  • Primer pocket getting slightly snug to tight (actually fine, means it’s not loose yet)

The Bottom Line

There’s no universal reload count — there’s the count your brass gets with your process. A 9mm case you neck size, anneal, and load at 90% pressure will outlast one that runs through a Glock, gets full-length sized at max charge, and skips the case prep. The caliber sets the ceiling; your process determines where you land under it.
